We are looking for bright, enthusiastic and well-motivated people to work as paid tutors in Liverpool and Merseyside schools through The Tutor Trust, an education charity supporting young people in disadvantaged communities. Work is available both in-person and online, and you will be paid to plan and deliver an hour-long tutoring session.

Who are we?

Tutor Trust is a charity; we aim to provide tutoring to young people from low-income backgrounds whose parents are unable to afford private tutors. We work with schools to offer subsidised, high-quality tutoring to these young people, working in partnership with their teachers to ensure the tutoring has the maximum impact. Schools pay us for our service and we in turn pay our tutors for the high-quality tutoring they provide, as well as providing tutors with full training and ongoing support.

Tutor Trust is proud to have been selected as one of the approved Tuition Partners of the National Tutoring Programme (NTP). The NTP aims to support schools as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and to provide a longer-term contribution to closing the attainment gap. Schools will be able to access subsidised high-quality tuition from Tutor Trust through the NTP. Tutor Trust thus hopes to double the numbers we support this academic year, and we expect to serve 6,500 pupils across Greater Manchester, Leeds-Bradford, and Merseyside.

How does tutoring work with The Tutor Trust?

At the point of application, you will be asked to specify your preferred subject to tutor in. In primary schools, we ask that tutors are comfortable tutoring both Maths and Reading and in secondary schools you can choose between English, Maths or Science. If we have places available, you are able to train in multiple subjects.

Before you can tutor, you must complete 10 hours of online training. This is a mix of self-learning through structured pathways and live interactive sessions online. Once you have finished this, and we have received 2 references and an enhanced DBS check (we will pay for this), you will be eligible to tutor.

When a school has a confirmed tuition, we advertise this to our tutors online and then tutors can express their interest in tutoring at the school. The tuition sessions will happen at the same time for a fixed number of weeks, so we ask that you make sure you are available for the duration of the assignment. You will work either 1:1 or in small groups with pupils.

For applicants who have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), we can offer you a bespoke fast track training programme. This allows you to move through the training process more quickly, with tailored support from our team of qualified teachers. The fast-track training consists of a general online induction, an online safeguarding course, and a lesson-planning task. Our Quality Team mark these elements.

What we’re looking for:

- To tutor in primary schools, you will need to have a grade B or equivalent in GCSE English and Maths.
- To tutor in secondary schools, you will need to have a grade A or equivalent in the GCSE subject you wish to tutor in (English, Maths or Science).
- At least three hours availability a week to deliver tutoring.
- Voluntary and extra-curricular commitments e.g. university society, sports team or charity work.
- The ability to show humility, respect and be empathetic.
- Planning and organisational skills.
- Genuine enthusiasm for becoming a tutor and making a difference in the local community.
- No previous tutoring/teaching experience is required, and you do not need to have any existing teaching qualifications. (Please tell us on your application form if you do though!)
