About the role

The Lambeth Living Well Network Alliance (LWNA) was developed to transform the way that adult mental health services are delivered in Lambeth with the vision that ‘every citizen, whatever their abilities or disabilities, can flourish, contribute to society and lead the life they want to lead’. The role of a Peer Support Worker is to enable people using services, staff and organisations to positively re-frame lived mental health experience so that people are experts in their own lives.

Duties will include:

- To develop a short-term supportive relationship between peer and peer supporter that respects mutual boundaries and the boundaries of our service
- To provide a personalised and flexible offer of support for people experiencing mental health needs and their loved ones, which inspires hope and creates a non-judgmental space
- To give individual or group support to help people and the people close to them to talk about what they are feeling and experiencing
- To support people to develop coping techniques and support ideas and approaches that have been helpful to others
- To provide a coaching and mentoring role which supports people to identify and set their own goals, building on their skills
- To provide a sense of belonging to a community of people with similar experiences
- To help people feel more empowered about their own wellbeing
- To support people to become peers themselves via various opportunities if desired
- To signpost peers to community resources that will benefit them, where appropriate
- To do outreach to relevant communities and organizations

About you

To be a Peer Support Worker at Certitude, the following are essential:

- Lived experience
- An understanding of the difference between peer support and professional care in mental health
- Willingness to engage with people in crisis and mental / emotional distress with empathy and respect
- Ability to support and encourage peers you are working with and respond calmly, including when faced with challenging behaviour
- Willingness to travel, work evenings
- Prepared to follow LWNA policies and procedures relevant to this role
- Ability to use IT skills to keep records and file appropriately
- Knowledge of mental health and social & community resources within Lambeth
- Eager to learn and to apply learning in supporting people
- Able to understand the need to reflect on what has been done well and what needs improvement
