Job Description
Primary Purpose

• To act as the focal point of engagement for the laboratory service with customers, suppliers and regulators for the MB(NA) site.
• To manage the effective and efficient operation of the laboratory service to the business.

This position sits in Newton Abbot, UK and will report to the Principal Quality Engineer (Product)

Key Responsibilities

• Apply subject matter expertise to design and implement new processes and procedures for the inspection and validation of products and processes.
• Measure and monitor levels of business satisfaction with the lab services. Report the implications of given levels of performance, recommend and implement action.
• Undertake preparation, testing, and examination of metallurgical specimens. Analyse results, produce reports, and make appropriate recommendations in order to ensure metals and associated processes are fit for purpose. Examine faulty/defective materials/parts, to determine cause and make recommendations for rectification.
• Oversee maintenance of calibrations and records for laboratory and production equipment as required. Report any failure of calibrations, advise on any actions required, and undertake recalibration following rectification.
• Raise submissions to out-source testing house(s) for mechanical properties and other testing not undertaken at MB Aerospace Newton Abbot site. Check and clear testing certification and material lots for production use/customer shipment.
• Use materials knowledge to assess, advise on and approve appropriate methods of manufacture including placement of special processes within the manufacturing sequence. Assess and implement customer specifications.
• Ensure that laboratory processes and procedures are robust, fit for purpose and all equipment and tools in use are well maintained and correctly calibrated. Regularly assess Laboratory functions for technical adequacy, report and make recommendations for improvements.
• Support NADCAP, Third Party and Customer Audits in the laboratory by providing documentation and information when required
• Review material specifications, standards and internal documentation to ensure processes meet customer and regulatory requirements.
• Facilitate the collection and analysis of product quality data to help identify opportunities for improvement.
• Keep up-to-date with new technologies and materials development. Support their adoption where possible in the business.
• To at all times demonstrate adherence to the business’ values and behaviors, fully aligning with the MB Cornerstones.
• Participate in 6S activity and audits where required.
• To promote a safety-first culture. Intervene constructively to highlight or challenge unsafe or perceived unsafe actions.
• To conduct any other reasonable activities as directed by line management.

Interfacing Responsibilities
For the principal tasks and responsibilities identified above to be carried out and discharged effectively, there are a number of limited responsibilities of other groups or persons that must also be discharged, these include:

• Process Owners. To take responsibility for the processes they own and to ensure they are effectively measured and improved.
• Action Owners. To ensure the timely and effective closure of all open actions with appropriate learning identified and embedded into process.
• Audit Stakeholders. To ensure the provision of timely support for all audits planned within their areas of the business.

Provision of Materials subject matter expertise across the MB(NA) site.

Job Requirements

• Minimum 2nd class degree or equivalent in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or Metallurgy / consideration will be given to Scientific degrees (Physics/Chemistry) were appropriate experience can be demonstrated.
• Proven experience in managing people and engaging with multiple stakeholders.
• Experience in creating procedures in a laboratory environment and ensuring adherence to procedures
• Metallurgical and materials testing and analysis experience in the Aerospace, Power Generation industry, Medical, Nuclear, or Automotive manufacturing or research and development.
• Demonstrable proficiency in use of Microsoft Office suite of products.
• Associate or Practitioner of the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI), or can demonstrate working towards it.
• Excellent communication skills (written and oral), including report writing.
• Demonstrable ability to prioritise and manage conflicting demands whilst meeting operational deadline requirements.
