Infrastructure Engineer

Flowminder is a pioneering, internationally operating non-profit organisation that supports disaster relief and development efforts through several products including the analysis of data gained from mobile phones and household surveys in privacy and security preserving manners. We are now looking for an Infrastructure Engineer with excellent communication skills to facilitate and (depending on experience) drive and lead the expansion and improvement of our small but worldwide infrastructure and product installations in co-operation with key technology partners.

As an Infrastructure Engineer, you will:

- Work with internal colleagues and international partners to install, maintain and operate our products on remote physical infrastructure
- Support the continuous operation of our products and solutions using the most efficient methods available in order to meet the expected level of service
- Work closely and interactively with our partner organisations showing initiative in all technical communication with them
- Demonstrate, by example, the correct and expected behaviours when dealing with data that, at times, can include personal and commercially sensitive information
- Implement best practice around security and data privacy
- Work with a diverse and cross-functional team of engineers, developers, trainers, academics and data scientists

This role requires deep technical knowledge plus the ability to communicate about that knowledge.

You will:

- Be fluent in English including in a technical environment. French would be a bonus
- Show patience, determination, resilience and persistence when developing and maintaining relationships with technical “opposite numbers” in partner organisations
- Be able to encourage and motivate partner technical staff to focus on the activities that we require of them
- You may be required to travel to partner countries in Africa and other territories where low and middle-income countries exist

Technical Skills:

- Linux System Management of remote environments including configuration, commissioning, debugging, maintenance and monitoring
- A passionate interest in consistency in a deployed environment by incorporating automation, configuration management and automatic deployment
- Familiarity with security in practice: server hardening, jump stations, 2FA, encryption
- Familiarity with communications: VPNs, networked storage, distributed databases, firewalls, enterprise cloud solutions and networking generally
- Detailed familiarity with Identity and Access Management with a good knowledge of the principles contained within ISO 27001
- Linux. Docker. PostgreSQL administration. Redis. Bash
- Familiarity with: Python, SQL, Ansible, Terraform
