The Company

It’s an exciting time to be part of BAI Communications. We have been awarded a 20-year contract by Transport for London (TfL) to deliver high-speed mobile connectivity across the capital in the largest infrastructure project of its type in the world. As part of the contract, BAI will build and operate a new advanced network enabling passengers to enjoy uninterrupted connected travel across the Tube for the first time. This will mean passengers can catch up on work, stream content, contact family and friends, and access social media while travelling. A full-fibre network will also be delivered that will connect to buildings and street assets, like traffic lights and lampposts that house small mobile transmitter cells to leverage the power of 5G and the Internet of Things.

The Position

Job Title: Apprentice Software Developer
Apprenticeship Course: Level 4 Software Developer
Apprenticeship Duration: 24 Months
Location: London W2
Working Hours: Monday to Friday 9 to 5.30
Salary: £21,500


Role and Responsibilities

Initially you will be on a guided learning path to gain exposure and first-hand experience into the incredibly exciting programme we are delivering for Transport for London. You will gain exposure to the technologies we use, especially around virtualised and cloud infrastructure, data science and IP networking. The role will be involved in providing technical solutions for our infrastructure requirements and our 3rd party customers products with the support of our partners and the wider IT Team. In addition to project work, BAI Communications will sponsor your continued learning on the Software Developer Apprenticeship Level 4.
You will code, in a manner consistent with published coding standards, as part of a team to ensure all objectives are delivered to a high standard of quality and accuracy
Develop solutions within agreed timescales and standards
Participate in the review of requirements and designs
Planning and executing test plans and taking ownership of any potential problems to ensure they are resolved
Work within agile frameworks
Find and track software bugs
Keep up to date with new technologies and techniques
You will design technically and document aspects of the software project, including but not limited to database, business rules and presentation
You will identify and highlight where productivity gains can be achieved either through new techniques or adoption of programming tooling and processes. If appropriate design, develop and implement programming tools for internal use.
You will deploy updates onto target infrastructure, performing any necessary system tests and ensuring accuracy of deployment
You will assist in the optimisation of the virtualised and cloud environments through the development of automated processes

Desired Qualities, Skills and Knowledge:

Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work well independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team
Ability to multi-task
Customer focused, keeping the customer at the heart of all decision making.
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Experience using Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat (PDF).
Experience and understanding of CI/CD principles and the use of CI/CD tools would be advantageous
Experience with modern scripting languages (ex. Bash, Python) and version control environments (ie. Git) would be advantageous
Hands on experience with cloud computing and containerisation would be advantageous
Experience with Linux or Windows administration would be advantageous
Minimum requirement of 5 GCSE’s
