We are looking for 2 Ocean Freight Business Development Managers to be based in Manchester or London (the roles will offer a hybrid working model - circa 2-3 days based in the office and 2-3 days working remotely/visiting customers).

The Ocean Freight BDM’s primary job is to target and gain new business (no billing minimum 6 months) with a core focus on the acquisition of Ocean Freight which falls in line with the set sales strategy. The Ocean Freight BDM will create a target management plan in line with the identified product ‘sweet spots’ and will build a rolling pipeline that is at least 5 times the individuals targets (Volume and Revenue). The Ocean Freight BDM will strive to become the ‘go-to’ knowledge champion of the UK Ocean Freight.

Key responsibilities:
1. New Business Acquisition
a. Build and maintain a pipeline in Microsoft Dynamics in accordance with company guidelines
b. Target and qualify a list of potential clients in focus trade lanes identified by Yusen Ocean Freight and Sales Management
c. Gain new business and target new trade lanes within client selection
d. Provide client and target information, maintain CRM with 100% accuracy on every sales call and visits.
e. Plan and achieve minimum number of sales calls per week (between 5-10)
f. Generate sales leads to overseas offices and networks
g. Establish strong relationships to customers as well as colleagues
2. Collaboration champion (Sales & Product)
a. Engage with the Ocean Freight management team to facilitate identification of opportunities and review target management plan continuously
b. Drive business development reviews and to ensure that CRM is updated to the highest standards
c. Ensure detailed SOPs are in place for all new clients onboarded
3. Quantitative and Qualitative Reporting
a. Monthly review of performance and action plan setting (where needed)
b. Regular presentations of pipeline and activities using Microsoft Dynamics (dashboard) to management
4. Industry engagement
a. Drive ocean freight webinars and share market intel from both the industry and forwarding environment


Key requirements:
• University degree or applicable experience required
• Proven sales experience of in a multi-national freight forwarding company
• Excellent knowledge of the UK ocean freight market
• Has completed Professional Selling training - either through an external trainer or in-house
• Ability to identify market leads and convert them into business opportunities
• Flexible and proactive approach
• Excellent stakeholder influencing skills
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
• Ability to critically analyse information, present to the relevant stakeholders and provide recommendations
• Strong drive for results
• High degree of independence
• Commercial acumen
• Driving licence (travel will be required)
