RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) is based at Culham, within UKAEA, specialising in remote handling and automated systems. Job Description

Who are we looking for?

We are recruiting for an Electrical Systems Design Engineer within RACE. In this role you will define the Electrical System requirements and specifications, generate layout designs, oversee detailed design drawings and deliver Electrical System designs across the RACE portfolio. The role also involves the maintenance and upgrade of existing legacy remote handling equipment and managing obsolescence issues.

You will plan, co-ordinate and perform engineering, design, testing and/or analysis work for a complete project of moderate scope or for significant packages of work within a major and diverse project. You’ll be recognised as an internal expert in a specific field and will provide technical advice and guidance. You may also act as lead person, providing technical leadership and engineering solutions and possibly assign, co-ordinate and review the work of other engineers / apprentices.

What will you be responsible for?

- Managing assigned projects and work packages in order to deliver required results within specification, time and cost parameters.
- Check/signing off work completed by others in their area of specialism to ensure quality and consistency.
- Coach and supervise less experienced colleagues and provide advice to other engineering colleagues in their field of expertise in order to develop overall capability.
- Within a specific area, set and monitor standards to establish and maintain best practice and quality.
- Effective management of risk and safety requirements. Identify opportunities for improvements and propose solutions in order to contribute to continuous improvement within UKAEA.
- Undertake or contribute to design studies on behalf of external customers. Communicate with a range of UKAEA colleagues to ensure a shared understanding of technical issues, work requirements and progress.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria and Qualifications:

- Extensive electrical engineering design experience and the ability to assess and perform mechatronic design work.
- Knowledge of remote handling systems and remote operations is highly desirable as is knowledge of nuclear, operations and/or petrochemical operations.
- Proven ability to interact efficiently with people in a variety of different situations.
- Experience of maintenance of legacy equipment, reverse engineering where appropriate.
- Proven ability to deliver complex engineering projects from start to finish.
- Able to produce high quality work to deadlines.
- Flexible working attitude with the ability to work as an individual or as a team member.
- Able to coach less experienced staff.
- Ability to design complex mechatronic systems.
- Thorough understanding of governance, H&S and compliance issues.
- Experience of working in a cross functional team.
- Experience of working in a safety dominated working environment.
- Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership.
- Engineering or technology degree, or equivalent experience.
