Job Description

Who are we looking for?

A unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced leader to join our growing organisation and lead the new In-Vessel Engineering section. The In-Vessel Engineering section is a focal point at the UKAEA for developing capability in the integrated design of fusion in-vessel systems and related nuclear engineering development.

You will lead the design and progression of some of our most challenging technologies and projects. You will act as a point of contact and influence internal department managers, as well as the technical direction of UKAEA and its international collaborators.

A more advanced aspect of your duties will be to define the strategy and think strategically for UKAEA, applying expertise to business development proposals and decisions, whilst providing specialist technical knowledge and direction in this complex technical field.

What will you be responsible for?

- Acting as a Technical Reference for the organisation in the integrated design of fusion in-vessel systems and related nuclear engineering development.
- Managing the work and development of the employees in the Section, coordinating the Section’s efforts in line with the Central Engineering Department’s objectives.
- Effectively managing project/operational activities of a multi-disciplinary project team of multiple engineers, designers and analysts.
- Leading the development of processes for best practice in engineering development and/or design for implementation by the team on various projects.
- Actively promoting the Section’s skills and expertise within the UKAEA Engineering division.
- Identifying technology shortfalls and conceptualise, plan and propose appropriate R&D activities or projects to ensure that technical risk is managed and to make strides in technical capability or efficiency.
- Keeping abreast of developments, innovation and best practice in relevant engineering disciplines, and make recommendations for promulgation within the Unit.

Qualifications

Skills, experience and competencies required

Essential:

- A relevant engineering degree or equivalent.
- Ability to perform exploratory design calculations using first principles.
- Experience with fusion-relevant environmental factors such as vacuum and magnetic fields.
- Good working knowledge of structural and thermal engineering, solid mechanics and engineering materials.
- Leading teams and supervising other staff.
- Good communication and technical writing skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.

Desirable:

- Experience with working to design standards and design codes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a multi-disciplinary technical team in delivering a highly bespoke engineering system, including making complex rational design trades.
- Experience in originating project or research funding proposals.
- Attained or actively working towards Chartered status with a suitable professional institution.
