Innovate UK are funding CorkSol UK Limited and the University of Huddersfield to develop more sustainable, cost-effective and insulating fibre-based solutions, via an exciting, new Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). This is a cross-disciplinary project that involves both the School of Arts and Humanities and the School of Applied Sciences.

We are looking to appoint Sustainable Fibre-Based Thermal Insulation Engineer to lead on the design, development, optimisation, and manufacturing of novel cork-based insulation products for use within the housing sector. Additionally, the project will embed a research and development capability in the business to enable and sustain further product development, beyond the life of the KTP. The benefits of the project will reach throughout CorkSol UK Limited, and beyond, into the company’s supply chain, truly making a green impact on the insulation industry and the building/housing sector.

Becoming a Sustainable Fibre-Based Thermal Insulation Engineer is an exciting opportunity to use your academic knowledge to make an impact in the heart of industry and develop your career to the next level.

The Company

CorkSol is a well-established company, focused on the development and sale of innovative solutions for the rendering market. The main aim of our growth plan is to build upon our existing product range and develop new, eco-friendly, insulation solutions which help address some of the insulation challenges in hard-to-treat homes. Additionally, we are looking to implement a level of tunability into our products to allow improved flexibility to keep up with changing sectoral demands.

The Role

As a KTP Associate, you will be responsible for the successful management and delivery of this 2-year project, with the advice and guidance of both company and university-based supervisors. You will quickly gain an understanding of the company and market opportunities, to develop novel thermal insulation solutions. Utilising your science and/or textiles-based academic background, and ability to engage and build relationships with stakeholders, you will develop a strategic plan to identify, develop, test, and commercialise novel cork-based textile products for use as insulation within the housing sector.

As part of the nationally acclaimed KTP scheme (https://www.ktp-uk.org/graduates/) a personal development package is available to support the delivery of the project, and ensure you can reach their full potential. KTP is an invaluable way for talented graduates and postgraduates to fast-track their career development in their chosen sector and establish their position as the industry leaders of tomorrow.

The Person

You will have a Masters degree in a Science, Engineering or Textiles-related discipline, or a BSc/BEng degree in a Science, Engineering or Textiles-related discipline with additional industry experience, and demonstrable experience in undertaking a research project. Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills are essential, as well as the ability to engage with, and build relationships with, a variety of stakeholders. You will be committed to your personal and professional development.
