- ABOUT US -
The Institute of Inner City Learning (IICL) is one of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s four Institutes with campuses in Birmingham and London.

The IICL has multiple intakes per annum, delivers continuous learning, teaching and recruitment cycles and operates in an intensely competitive inner-city and multicultural HE environment. The Institute currently has approx. 4,000 non-residential students on Certificates of Higher Education, Honours degrees, Masters and Doctoral programmes, some of which are also taught at weekends.

- THE ROLE -
The post holder will be responsible for maintaining the security of UWTSD premises and the environment. In addition, depending on Rota and need, they will be expected to carry out caretaking duties, portering, and minor maintenance, as well as other general duties required by the role. General caretaking duties such as shifting furniture and packages, litter picking, leaf clearance and maintaining the general cleanliness of the University environment will also be an integral part of the role. The post holder will be required to travel between university location using University Vehicles as required. The role is for a Weekend Delivery.

The physical nature of the role requires the post holder to possess the ability to lift and carry heavy loads and to be on foot for large parts of the working day. The post holder will be expected to work on a Rota system; this will include weekend, nights, and shift outside normal working hours to respond to the demands of the service.

Main duties will include:
• Be responsible for maintaining the security of the premises and its contents in accordance with the University’s current requirements. Opening and locking up of the University buildings including lights, internal doors and alarms.
• Assist staff, students and visitors wherever necessary.
• Ensure all alarm systems and calls are handled as per agreed standard.
• Provide reception services and assistance to all stakeholders as required.
• Ensure the car parks and parking areas are safe for use, checking for deterioration of fabric, surface and lines.
• Ensure parking space requests are delivered in a timely manner.
• Undertake portering related tasks as required including setting up and clearing away furniture, delivery of parcels, assisting in unloading deliveries, issuing of keys and passes to students, staff and contractors.
• Undertake office furniture moves and setting up of classrooms as required.
• Maintain the environment in a clean & orderly manner.
• Undertake cleaning duties in a thorough, accurate and timely manner with appropriate attention to detail
• Ensure machinery such as hoovers and buffers are used in compliance with Health & Safety requirements
• Ensure all areas / rooms are ready for use and free of debris or unwanted items, moving items to assigned places and changing any bulbs as required.
• Move, carry and deliver equipment, objects and furnishings as necessary (possibly of a heavy, awkward or highly valuable nature).
• Support catering in transportation of food and drinks deliveries as require.
• Support Conferences in set up of rooms.
• Be responsible in ice/snowy weather for salting/gritting of paths/steps/slopes and car parks. To help ensure the safety of all university users and to enable the university to keep functioning in times of heavy snow falls key areas will need to be cleared.
• Undertake horticultural practices, carrying out all types of cleansing and grounds maintenance duties such as street sweeping, litter picking, leaf clearance, etc., as required.
• Ensure rental car procedures are followed as per agreed standard.
• Undertake Waste management duties as per University’s policy and Procedures.
• Collection of rubbish from around the campus; dispose of waste materials in a safe and hygienic manner in accordance with the University’s environmental and sustainability policy and ensuring its availability for collection as required; keep the walkways and car park clean and litter free;
• General duties such as unblocking sinks and toilets, repairing door handles, cleaning light fittings and replacing where necessary minor parts such as tubes, bulbs and diffusers in accordance with safe working practices.
• Basic maintenance of University property.
• Communicate with the Team Leader and colleagues to inform of issues, problems, difficulties that affect delivery of service including maintenance and upkeep of equipment and buildings.
• Wear the correct uniform, where required.
• Undertake any other duties commensurate with the position.
• Monitor the CCTV and alarm systems, test the fire alarm systems and report any incidents or faults to the Facilities Manager / Assistant Facilities Manager, keeping records of alarm activations and testing.
• Respond to emergency situations and provide first responder actions, for example, First Aid /alerting emergency services.
• Ensure all incidents on the campus are dealt with in accordance with the University’s guidelines and keep all stakeholders informed.
• Act as the first point of out-of-hours contact for individuals on campus.
• Use the computer aided Facilities Management System to monitor new and existing jobs as well as the use of Outlook and other software packages as required by the role.
• Complete reports as required and ensure that they are forwarded to appropriate department within given timescales.
• Enter and maintain basic data electronically or manually as required including daily reports.

- REQUIREMENTS -
You should have:
• Good general level of education
• Willingness to undertake first-aid certificate training
• Previous experience in providing grounds and minor maintenance service
• Previous experience of working in Higher Education
• Ability to identify potential risks and undertake risk assessments
• Ability to provide excellent customer service
• Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels
• Ability to meet tight deadlines
• Adequate IT skills
• Demonstrates self-motivation and ability to work unsupervised
• Able to work as part of a team and in partnership with others
• Recognises the need for and demonstrates appropriate confidentiality
• Able and prepared to work flexibly, including travel between campuses and locations when required
