Job Description

Who are we looking for?

We have a great opportunity for an Electrical Technician to join Remote Applications in Challenging Environments(RACE). RACE is a business unit, based at Culham, within the UK Atomic Energy Authority, specialising in robotics for hazardous environments.

The role of the Electrical Technician is to undertake the wiring, maintenance, modification, commissioning, and operation of electromechanical RACE robotic, remote handling and associated equipment.

You will be involved in a wide range of applications, particularly in the fields of remote handling and robotics. As an Electrical Technician you will have proven ability to deliver electrical wiring and build tasks as well as ability to produce high quality work to deadlines with flexible working attitude to work as individual and as part of a team. If you are able to coach less experienced staff and you have understanding of Health and Safety and compliance to relevant standards, then we would like to hear from you.

What will you be responsible for?

- Carrying out the build and installation of Electrical systems working on RACE projects involving the research and development of new equipment and tasks and be able to recognise potential issues and use effective communication and interpersonal skills with project team members where an issue has been identified.
- Undertaking the wiring, testing, maintenance and commissioning of circuits and equipment for both RACE and the JET remote handling systems.
- Undertaking the prompt fault finding and repair of Remote handling electrical systems.
- Developing and writing procedures for the set-up, maintenance and testing of equipment.
- Assisting in the reverse engineering of existing systems and equipment and pass information to engineers or Drawing office staff as required.
- Recording maintenance activities using the operational documentation system (ODS) after training in its use.
- Mentoring an apprentice working within the workshop.

Please note that you may be required to support activities outside normal working hours and you may be required to work in Beryllium and Radiation controlled areas wearing Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) up to and including an airline feed pressurised suit. All necessary training and registration for this will be provided.

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

- Ability to understand and work from drawings and schematics
- Comprehensive knowledge of crimping and soldering techniques
- Experience in electrical wiring and panel build
- Recognised electrical engineering apprenticeship (or equivalent) with relevant qualification in engineering

Desirable skills, experience and competence

- Knowledge and experience of assembly of high-density connectors
- Experienced in fault finding techniques in electrical systems and devices
- Experience in highly regulated industry
- Qualified to the current BS7671 Wiring Regulations
