H3AT is the UK’s leading authority on tritium processing, distribution, storage, recycling and disposal, delivering advanced tritium R&D programmes and safe fuel cycle operations to support the Joint European Torus (JET). Our new technology centre will provide world-leading facilities to research and carry out testing of tritium technologies. These will be invaluable in advancing the delivery of fuel cycles for present and next generation fusion reactors.?

Job Description

Who are we looking for?

As a Technical Programme Manager, you'll have a role that is critical to the delivery of H3AT’s research programme, responsible for definition of strategy and scope for our Hydrogen Isotope Materials Interactions research programme, as well as managing delivery of the associated projects. You will be key to shaping and delivering the research programme and enabling the development and understanding of materials for fusion fuel cycles. Key behaviours for the role include: highly motivated, strategic, excellent communication skills, technical excellence, ability to form strong relationships and collaborations and to lead a team.

What will you be responsible for?

- Developing a strategy for research to be delivered within your technical area.
- Ensuring delivery of projects within the programme, including securing sufficient budget and resource.
- Building a network of expert contacts to enable rapid progress and developing collaborations with other research institutes and universities around the world.
- Engaging with stakeholders, including major international collaborators.
- Representing and promoting the team and their progress at major conferences, and ensuring dissemination of work in high impact publications.

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

- World leading expert in hydrogen isotope interactions with materials, including permeation, sorption and desorption behaviours
- Expertise in materials science, ideally including irradiated materials
- Experience with materials analysis techniques, for example SIMS, TDS, TEM, PAS etc
- Experience of material behaviour modelling and validation, particularly permeation and trapping etc
- Ability to understand and exploit unique material behaviours for the development/improvement of gas handling systems
- Knowledge of tritium and fusion fuel cycles would be beneficial but is not essential
- Proven track record of leading and growing large research projects/programmes
