Main purpose and scope of job
The Operations Supervisor is responsible for; the health and safety of all staff, contractors to site and visitors to sites under their jurisdiction, the minimisation of impact to the environment whilst operating the sites, delivering customer expectations in terms of service and product quality, and operating the sites in an efficient and effective manner in line with the annual budget.
The purpose of the role is to ensure that Buckinghamshire HWRC contract sites are run in a safe and environmentally friendly manner, in accordance with relevant legislation and budgetary requirements. Area Supervisors are expected to lead by example at all times to ensure that an excellent service is delivered to the client by all sites and the teams working on site. Area Supervisors are expected to have the necessary skills and aptitude required for the job, in order to demonstrate to their team best practice and strong leadership qualities.

Duties and key responsibilities - Operational
Responsible for their own personal safety and that of all personnel under their authority, including others who may be affected by the company’s activities. In particular:
• Carry out assigned tasks and duties in a safe manner, in accordance with instructions, and to comply with safety rules/procedures, regulations and codes of practice.
• If aware of any unsafe practice or condition, or if in any doubt about the safety of any situation, consult their Line Management.
• Obtain and use the correct tools/equipment for the work and not to use any that are unsafe or damaged. All tools, equipment and personal protective equipment must be stored in the approved place after use.
• Ensure that all guards are securely fixed and that all safety equipment and personal protective clothing/equipment provided are used.
• Not to operate any plant or equipment unless authorised.
• To report any accident, near-miss, dangerous occurrence or dangerous condition to their Line Manager.
• To switch off and secure unattended plant or equipment.
• To avoid improvised arrangements and suggest safe ways of eliminating hazards.
• Not to participate in horseplay or place fellow employees in danger by their actions.
• Adopt a proactive manner to energy usage and suggest ways of improving energy performance.

Experience
• Experience of working in a waste/logistics/transport/maintenance operation in a team leader/supervisor capacity.
• Experience of operating and working with heavy plant preferred.
• Experience of working in an environment where safety has been given top priority.
• Computer literate in Microsoft office and web based systems.
• Good communication and numerate skills.
• Positive attitude and demonstrable drive to improve health and safety and compliance.
• Experienced at working in a customer / client focused operation.
• Excellent time keeping is essential.
• Experience in planning and working within a cost budget.
• Operation of waste management / construction plant / materials handling machinery desirable.
• COTC Level 4 TSH is highly desirable, or commitment to complete FCCs internal Competency Management System task book within 6 months essential.
• IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent is highly desirable.
• ILM Level 3 Certificate Leadership & Management accreditation preferable.
• Experience of working in a waste/logistics/transport/maintenance operation in a team leader/supervisor capacity.
• Experience of working in customer / client focused operations essential.
• Experience in planning and working within a cost budget essential.

Essential Knowledge
• Satisfactory completion of the relevant Competency Management System modules.
• Satisfactory completion of the Certificate of Technical Competence.
• Completion of all other training as defined within the Training Matrix.
• Excellent understanding of Health and safety requirements.

• To act on own initiative but listen to the advice and requirements of others.
• Flexibility with working hours, occasional periods of being on call or out of hours working and alternate weekends will be expected.
• To work within defined timescales and deadlines to comply with contract and company requirements.
• Current Driving licence.
• Strong change management skills.
• Ability to work individually, and as part of the team in order to achieve contract objectives is essential.
• Willingness to learn new techniques and us of new technologies that benefit the operation.
• Good understanding of operational key performance indicators and the importance of monitoring them in order to analyse and identify room for improvement.
