Main Purpose and Scope of Job
Reporting to the Day Operations Team Leader, the Day Operator will be part of the Day Operations Team responsible for the safe, compliant and efficient operation of the weighbridge, main tipping hall and plant feeding, Mechanical Treatment Plant, Ash handling and all traffic movements associated with the delivery and collection of waste inputs and outputs and consumable materials at Millerhill RERC facility. Millerhill RERC is a recycling and energy recovery facility where waste is processed to recover recyclable materials and energy through mass combustion.

Duties and Key Responsibilities
1. Health & Safety
• Ensure that all activities within the Millerhill RERC pre-treatment area are carried out in a safe manner in line with FCC Safety Policy and all Health & Safety statutory requirements.
• Assist with the co-ordination all vehicle movements on site in line with safe traffic management practices.
• Safe operation and use of equipment and plant that is fit for purpose and operated in accordance with training provided.
• Carry out risk assessments to ensure activities are completed in a safe manner at all times and identify when new tasks arise to ensure risks are assessed before implementation.
• Working as part of a team striving for continual improvement in minimising Health & Safety risk at Millerhill RERC plant.
• Ensure drivers visiting the site are inducted and are aware of site safety and emergency procedures.
• Ensure that high standards of housekeeping are maintained.
• Will act as the Nominated Person within the limits of their competence when required to carry out work safely.
• Record and report any accidents, incidents, near misses or defects in line with FCC Environment Procedures.
2. Environmental
• Responsible for minimising environmental impacts associated with the Day Operations at site including emissions of odour, dust, noise, vehicle pollutants, chemical spillages and use of energy, fuel and other materials.
• Carry out regular environmental monitoring checks in and around the tipping hall area, Mechanical Treatment plant and outside areas within the site boundary and ensuring compliance with the Environmental Permit at all times.
• Working as part of a team for continual improvement to minimise environmental impacts at the Millerhill RERC plant.
• Record and report any impacts or potential impacts on the environment.
• Operate the weighbridge in accordance with Duty of Care regulations, FCC Company policy and contractual requirements including preparation of waste transfer notes, hazardous waste consignment notes and weighbridge tickets.
3. Team working

• Taking an active role within the team regarding the decision making processes.
• Periodically act as a contact between FCC Environment and external contractors and customers.
• Communicate effectively with other departments within FCC Environment.
4. Key Activities
• Working within the Day Operations Team covering all Day Operations activities at the Millerhill RERC facility.
• Assisting with the daily intake of vehicles through operation of the weighbridge and tipping hall and ensuring compliance with Duty of Care regulations and FCC Environment procedures at all times.
• Ensuring all waste deliveries are recorded, weighed and dispatched efficiently in accordance with contract requirements.
• Provide high levels of customer service to all site users and ensure service delivery under the contract is maintained including compliance with key performance indicators.
• Carry out inspections on delivered waste to ensure compliance with the Environmental Permit and quality control of fuel including segregation, recording and reporting of any non-conforming material.
• Operation of overhead cranes, Mechanical Treatment Plant, front loader machinery, road sweeper, forklift trucks and any other machinery associated with the Day Operations at Millerhill RERC.
• Assist with completion of necessary reports to satisfy the requirements of both internal and external reporting.
• Assist with maintenance activities across the site including vehicles and plant associated with Day Operations.
• Ensure all machinery is fit for use by carrying out specified daily checks in line with FCC Procedures and reporting any defects.
• Participate in team briefings on a frequent basis and ensure handover between shifts is carried out effectively with good levels of communication across the teams.
• Champion site Environment and Health and Safety initiatives where required.
• Ensure that any defects are reported to a responsible person through the maintenance management system.
• Provide cover in the absence of other members of the team and the ability to transfer at short notice from one task to another when needed.
• Co-operate with Plant Operations staff to carry out routine environmental sampling.
• Provide support and assistance to other operations and maintenance teams at site when necessary.
• Manage stores and replenish stock when required including updating records and liaising with site administration.

Experience
• Experience working in an operator role in a heavy industrial environment preferably in the waste and recycling sector.
• Use of overhead cranes, mechanical plant, front loader machinery, road sweepers, forklift trucks and weighbridge. Training will be provided.
• Demonstrable skills in achieving demanding work requirements and ensuring customer needs are met.
• Experience working within a diverse operational team and a wide range of work areas.
• Experience with site monitoring and inspection with regards to safety, environmental impacts and maintenance including completion of documentation and reports.
• Understanding of Health and Safety and Environmental legislation.
• Understanding of safe and efficient traffic management within a busy environment.
• Understanding of safety relating to work equipment and plant.
• Experience with problem solving and decision making with consideration of safety, management of environmental impacts and service delivery.
• Computer literate. Training will be provided on the use of site specific software such as weighbridge reporting and maintenance management systems.
• Completion of stage 1 Health and safety course, the duty of care course and all relevant vehicle licences.
• Understand the importance of this individual role to the success of the facility as an entirety.

Essential Knowledge
• Satisfactory completion of the relevant Competency Management System modules.
• Completion of all other training as defined within the Training Matrix.
• Understanding of Health and Safety and Environmental Legislation.
• Operation of mobile plant, overhead cranes, road sweepers and weighbridges.
• Computer literate.
