The Position

Job Title: IT Infrastructure Engineer Apprentice
Apprenticeship Course: Level 3 Information Communication Technician (Support)
Apprenticeship Duration: 18 Months
Location: Home based (remote) Hull
Working Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30am-5pm or 9am-5:30pm
Salary: £18,000


Role and Responsibilities

This role isn’t your typical ‘IT Infrastructure Engineer’ job, with a lot of elements that make up your day to day working pattern, giving rise to a breadth of skills you will be able to nurture and cultivate during your time with them. As part of being an Apprentice, they will give you exposure to a wide range of tasks and functions to ensure your day-to-day role is diverse and engaging. Whilst this role is home based, you may be expected to travel occasionally to office locations and to attend team days.

Assisting the Infrastructure Team and the wider IT Services Department in the provision of infrastructure to support their platforms and ensure they are well maintained.
Proactive management of the infrastructure that supports their platforms.
Data centre environment monitoring and planning including generators, UPS, fire suppression and any related sensors.
Efficient running and change management of all server and storage infrastructure.
Internal infrastructure that serves their Active Directory and any server roles or features that these utilise.
Maintaining their email security systems
The maintenance of their hosted exchange platforms
Server builds and operating system management.
Backup and recovery of infrastructure and any associated data storage.
Assist with 2nd and 3rd line support for infrastructure related tickets raised with the IT support desk.
Work closely with the Support Team to ensure efficient, collaborative working in both project work and business as usual activities.

Continually look for ways in which to improve the systems and services that the department provides.
Work with knowledgebase and communications tools to ensure work instructions and processes are documented clearly and that all activities that may impact end users are communicated out effectively.
Participate in training and continuing development to meet both your professional and the business needs.
Participates in departmental, internal, and external meetings as required
Participates in project and development work as required
Ensure you stay informed as to any technological improvements and developments in infrastructure, share these with the team and build them into future plans.
Ensure industry standard best practise is adhered to wherever possible

Desired Qualities, Skills and Knowledge:

A keen interest in developing a career in IT
Good IT skills with familiarity of the Microsoft office suite including Teams
Building, repairing, and upgrading computer systems
Building, repairing, and upgrading servers
Working in a data centre or working with infrastructure in rack
Have Good attention to detail
A passion for delivering quality and driving excellence
Display an eagerness for change and continuous improvement
Strong communication skills
Ability to work as part of a team & collaboratively
Flexible attitude and approach
Willingness to work outside of normal hours to resolve high priority issues
