The Company
It’s an exciting time to be part of the company. The company have been awarded a 20-year contract by Transport for London (TfL) to deliver high-speed mobile connectivity across the capital in the largest infrastructure project of its type in the world. As part of the contract, the company will build and operate a new advanced network enabling passengers to enjoy uninterrupted connected travel across the Tube for the first time. This will mean passengers can catch up on work, stream content, contact family and friends, and access social media while travelling. A full-fibre network will also be delivered that will connect to buildings and street assets, like traffic lights and lampposts that house small mobile transmitter cells to leverage the power of 5G and the Internet of Things.

The Position
Job Title: Apprentice Test Engineer
Apprenticeship Course: Level 3 Information Communication Technician
Apprenticeship Duration: 18 months
Location: London W2 6BD
Working Hours: Monday to Friday 9 to 5.30
Salary: £21,500

Initially you will be on a guided learning path to gain exposure and first-hand experience into the incredibly exciting programme we are delivering for Transport for London. The purpose of this role is to support the Commissioning Specialist and wider delivery team to configure and commission the network equipment as construction activities are completed. The role will support with field testing and installation, supporting to ensure both the engineering and operations teams are aligned; spotting and escalating problems as they arise to keep the programme on schedule.

Role and Responsibilities

• Support the resolution of project issues and track progress updates
• Support construction contractors in the field with RF testing, including Coaxial and PIM testing, when technical engineering assistance is required to ensure successful commission of the DAS network in the stations.
• Assist in the configuration/commissioning and integration of DAS & IP network devices
• Perform Walk Test survey(s), both Call Testing and CW, in the underground station to ensure optimal RF performance and assist with the optimization of the DAS network
• Resolve any issues or escalate to the Commissioning Specialist
• Perform field testing
• Perform field installation of IT equipment and cabling for new projects
• Perform diagnostic troubleshooting and replacement of operational devices when needed

• Follow the training received when using all equipment, tools, materials or devices provided to protect their health & safety
• Take care of their own Health, Safety and Wellbeing and report any areas of concern
• Co-operate with others on Health & Safety and not interfere with or misuse anything provided for their own health, safety or wellbeing
• Tell someone, their employer, supervisor or health & safety representative if they think the work or inadequate precautions are putting anyone’s health & safety at risk

• Exposure to continuous moderate noise & working in an underground environment
• Travel across London as required to maintain wireless networks
• Move and/or lift material
• Available to work flexible hours - day/late/night shifts required (night shift, weekends, or emergency calls)

Desired Qualities, Skills and Knowledge:

Experience in Telecom Installation field would be advantageous
Knowledge of general engineering design and construction would be advantageous
A can-do attitude with a drive to learn and develop
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work well independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team
Ability to multi-task
Customer focused, keeping the customer at the heart of all decision making.
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Experience using Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat (PDF).
Knowledge of general engineering design and construction would be advantageous
Minimum requirement of 5 GCSE’s

Eligibility Criteria

GCSE or other Level 2 or higher qualification or;
12 months of work experience in the last 24 months
All financial associated costs are paid for by BAI Communications
