Temporary Fruit Processing Lab Technician

Established in 1904 by William John Thatcher, we have grown into one of the top cider-making businesses in the world. Now in our fifth generation of family cider makers, we’re exceptionally proud of what we have achieved, and we are even more excited about our plans for the future. We continue to experience huge growth of our Brands through industry-leading levels of investment in marketing, people development, innovation and world class technical enhancements in cider mill machinery.

For many years we have worked with LRS to press all their blackcurrants on site here at Myrtle Farm. This takes place from June to August. We’re now looking for a temporary team to help us with this process over the summer months.

Overall Purpose

- There are a variety of instrument-based tests that are carried out to ensure that the process is running correctly, and the final product meets specification.
- There are also several tests involving traditional ‘wet chemistry’; all using titrations.
- The testing frequencies are well defined although ad-hoc testing will be required as determined by production.
- Technicians are required to demonstrate general good laboratory practice in ensuring that the lab is kept clean and tidy, that working solutions of all chemicals are maintained, that consumables and stocks are maintained, and that the test results are recorded accurately and promptly.
- Technicians are required to liaise with the production team to ensure that they are aware of all test results to avoid any instances of non-conforming product. There is also a certain amount of responsibility for calculating additions, using basic ratio maths and systems built into Excel spreadsheets.
- All results will be entered into our computer system via a tablet.
- Training is provided, during the induction of employment, on all the requirements of the role.
- As this is a short, fixed term role for the summer period you would not be expected to take a significant amount of time off over the course of the season.

Personal Qualities and Behaviours

- Be accurate with a good attention to detail
- Have a responsible, trustworthy and positive attitude
- Be calm under pressure
- Be organised and punctual
- Have good interpersonal skills

Hours:

Rota will be based on working 12-hour shifts Monday-Sunday, alternating between days and nights. Average 42 hour week. A full rota will be issued at the start of the season.

Future prospects:

Whilst this is a temporary role, Thatchers is a growing brand and we are continually looking for new people to join our teams and develop their career with us potentially in the future.
