We are seeking to recruit an exceptional person with experience of Civil Engineering to lead the development of a new discipline in our department of Engineering and Technology. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong track record in research to contribute to our vibrant research community alongside developing new academic provision.

Within our department there are two EPSRC Centres of Excellence (Ion Beam Centre, IBC and Centre for Precision Technologies, CPT) and several other research centres and institutes. For example, our Institute of Railway Research has helped to improve the design and safe operation of railway vehicles and track, including key performance aspects such as suspension design, wheel-rail contact, traction and braking. The EPSRC’s IBC studies the interaction of energetic particles with matter and feeds into developments in nuclear materials, semiconductors and nanotechnology. The CPT is known for its innovation in measurement techniques and application of novel additive manufacturing technologies for applications including medical implants and aeroengines. We are also an EPSRC doctoral training partner in Materials. A number of other research centres cover a wide range of engineering disciplines.

The Department is expanding its research and teaching portfolios into the new area of Civil Engineering. We seek an experienced and highly motivated academic researcher to lead this new subject. The School of Computing and Engineering will be investing millions of pounds to grow this new activity in our research-intensive environment. As the founding subject lead you will have a unique opportunity to build a team around you that can address global research challenges in civil engineering and share that knowledge with our students. You will lead on the development of research and teaching facilities and will have access to further research support through our internal competitive bidding for research investment and PhD scholarships.

Our new BEng/MEng course in Civil Engineering is expected to take its first students in September 2024 and its first taught postgraduates a year later. You will be responsible for the process of curricular development with the view of ultimate accreditation to the Institution of Civil Engineers. From September 2022, the Department introduced a new teaching portfolio referred to as EnABLE (Engineering in an Activity Based Learning Environment) which is an eclectic blend of active learning methods including Problem-, Project- and Design-Based Learning and techniques known as CDIO (Conceive Design Implement and Operate). This already operates in the two existing subject areas of Mechanical and Automotive, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering; it is expected that the new Civil Engineering Subject Area will follow the same pedagogical methodologies.

You will have a first degree, doctoral degree and outstanding research track record in Civil Engineering or a closely related field. Excellent teaching and communication skills are also essential, together with prior experience in leading research groups and raising external project funding. Designing and developing new curricula in higher education would be a particular advantage.

With a commitment to developing excellent leadership and people management skills, you must be qualified to teach a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the Civil Engineering subject area. The ability to advance and teach the theory, methods, tools, and practices on all levels of the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum is required. You will also have a keen interest in and commitment to the application of novel pedagogical methods to support our EnABLE delivery style is essential.

The School is committed to Athena SWAN principles and the promotion of equality and diversity and is proud to hold a Bronze Athena SWAN Award.
