Crowdcube

How Webrecruit helped the world’s leading crowdfunding platform to source top talent to fit with their entrepreneurial culture.

The Company

Crowdcube is the world’s leading investment crowdfunding platform. They enable anyone to invest alongside professional investors in start-up, early stage and growth businesses through equity, debt and investment fund options.

The Challenge

We caught up with James Roberts, Crowdcube’s Head of Communications, to find out about the challenges he faced when sourcing particular skill-sets within his busy schedule.

Crowdcube’s main challenge was attracting talent with entrepreneurial flair. As the company is fast-growing, with a distinct small business/big idea mentality, this presented a number of challenges in finding staff that embody the business’ core values of entrepreneurialism and would welcome the opportunity to work in a start-up environment.

It’s innovative: we do new stuff every day. There is no rule book. Crowdcube’s culture is extremely entrepreneurial. We have an environment where we actively encourage new ways of thinking and working; and as such, need people who are open to trying new things.”

Additionally, as the business had not yet reached a level whereby it required an in-house HR and recruitment team, the hiring managers were responsible themselves for co-ordinating all hiring activities.

The Solution

James used Webrecruit’s candidate sourcing solution which assigned him a dedicated account manager who used a range of tools to source applications, and managed all candidate communications on behalf of Crowdcube.

Getting people who fit culturally is hard; you can’t train for culture and attitude. Our recruitment account manager is great – she’s culturally aligned with us. She does a lot of the ground work; she makes sure she understands us culturally then gets to the details of the role.”

On behalf of James, the account manager would telephone screen the best candidates found from advertising and proactive searching to gain their interest and assess their suitability.

The candidate management part of the service helps us massively – our account manager is able to manage the expectations of the candidates, negotiate salaries, and does what it takes to get the great talent to offer stage.”

The Results

Since Crowdcube and Webrecruit have worked together, they have gone on to successfully source and appoint a number of hires, from marketers and developers, to operations and legal professionals.

Final Words

Webrecruit has helped us recruit a number of key roles for the business and are really easy to work with. They’re focused on finding us the right people, not trying to sell us candidates, and are never pushy – that alone sets them apart from traditional agencies.”
