There has been primetime news over the past few weeks for one very big reason- sport! Not content with being the world leaders in golf, last weekend saw success in the sporting fields of boxing, football and hurling.
Firstly in boxing, Belfast’s Carl Frampton fought a hard match against Spanish Kiko Martinez and walked away the new Super Bantamweight title. The match was intense and on round 12, ‘The Jackal’ was declared the winner. Boxing has really brought communities together in Belfast and tickets for the match at Titanic slipways were a complete sell out (and were reselling for vast amounts more than they were purchased for!). Our MD was at the match and described the fight as “absolutely immense”, especially as he was able to secure a ‘posh’ seat as he called it. We are sure that Frampton’s manager, former champion Irish boxer Barry McGuigan, another incredibly inspirational figure for all who know him, had memories of his own success back in 1985! This was a family affair with Barry’s son also being Frampton’s coach and goes to show Frampton is a part of a full home grown success story.
In football, the two national teams had victories away from home turf. The Northern Ireland team won 2-1 against Hungary. 26-year-old striker Kyle Lafferty was key to this success, allowing Northern Ireland to win their first away match since 2010. The Republic of Ireland also had similar success winning 2-1 in their away game against Georgia. Overall, a huge show of how great coaching and sportsmanship has helped revive two teams who often don’t make the headlines.
Finally, the All-Ireland Hurling final in Croake Park ended in a tie… for the third time since 2011! The Tipperary versus Kilkenny match was tough and had the crowd of over 80,000 in an uproar. The use of super high-tec Hawkeye equipment allowed the very close match to be declared a draw after a wide was detected using the technology. The rematch is set for the end of the month.
